Abstract
Internet-of-Things (IoT) security faces an important challenge at the hardware level due to the low-cost nature of the devices. This problem motivates the use of lightweight alternative primitives, including a hardware-based fingerprinting solution called the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF). PUFs exploit random manufacturing variations of Integrated Circuits (IC) to generate a unique fingerprint that is nearly impossible to replicate physically. However, while physically unclonable, in practice PUFs can become predictable when a portion of input-output mappings are known, leading to the development of modeling attacks. This Ph.D. thesis presents contributions that focus on the development of lightweight PUF authentication systems by considering both defensive solutions and novel modeling attacks. First, we provide two novel zero-overhead defensive techniques that exploit different input-output mapping, namely, Selective Challenge-Response Pairs (Selective CRPs) and the Predictive Adversarial System (PAS). Second, we consider the possibility of improved modeling attacks, for which we explore Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Finally, we approach efficient system integration as an alternative method to develop low-cost PUF authentication by combining PUF and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

Had an amazing opportunity to attend the 3rd CINI HPC 2025 International Summer School in Naples 🇮🇹, from June 16 - 20.
It was an incredible week of learning, exploring, and connecting with brilliant people from around the world. Some key highlights for me:
–Deep dives into HPC systems and CUDA programming.
–Hands-on sessions with real-world tools and technologies.
–Exploring the role of High-Performance Computing in science, industry, and society.
Huge thanks to the organizers, speakers, and everyone behind the scenes for putting together such a well-run and inspiring event. And a special thanks to Associate Professor Sokol Kosta and the CLEVER-project for supporting my participation.

The IEEE INFOCOM Test of Time Paper Award recognizes papers published between 10 to 12 years ago (a three-year window) in the INFOCOM proceedings that have been most cited and widely recognized to have a significant impact on the research community.
For 2024, papers published in 2012–2014 INFOCOM proceedings are eligible. For 2024, the award committee has selected the following two papers for this award:
* Negin Golrezaei, Karthikeyan Shanmugam, Alexandros G. Dimakis, Andreas F. Molisch, Giuseppe Caire, FemtoCaching - Wireless Video Content Delivery through Distributed Caching Helpers, in Proc. of IEEE INFOCOM 2012.
* Sokol Kosta, Andrius Aucinas, Pan Hui, Richard Mortier, Xinwen Zhang, Thinkair - Dynamic resource allocation and parallel execution in the cloud for mobile code offloading, in Proc. of IEEE INFOCOM 2012.

The WINDMILL project, coordinated by professor Cedomir Stefanovic of Aalborg University, has used AI to optimise network performance for the Internet of Things (IoT). The project has trained early stage researchers in the application of AI, specifically machine learning, to address the challenges of complex cellular systems like 5G and beyond. Mr Stefanovic states ‘WINDMILL’s outcomes are directly relevant to 5G and 6G networks… As the demand for reliable and high-performance wireless communications grows, WINDMILL has demonstrated what AI can do for our wireless connectivity.’
